Whether you are active or not there will have been some time when you have been forced to be awake. What does this mean, awake? In its simplest form it means to be not asleep but being awake does also mean being conscious of your reality.
Once I was aware of my reality. It was wrapped around being wealthy, having lots of money, cars and, most of all, status. The day arrived when I was shown how little those things meant, temporarily all those things were taken away from me. The astonishing thing was how little difference it made to my day to day life, in fact these things had clouded the real value of human kindness, companionship and friendship. So ironically one moment I was rich and powerful and in the next, after everything had been taken away, I was much richer and much more powerful, yet I had less.
I was awake, not as in not asleep, but awake to the possibilities of a reality which did not hinge around how you appeared but focused on who you are. As in everything the Human Animal does has its role to play and I was happy that not all the things that made my life comfortable had been taken away for ever, but even happier that all the things that made be want to live had been made clear.
